Kerala court bans public meetings on the roadside

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday prohibited holding of public meetings on the side of public roads in the State.

The Bench directed the police, Public Works, Local Self-Government and Revenue Departments not to grant permission for holding public meetings on the roadside.

The court further directed the police to remove the stage and other paraphernalia, if such a meeting was held.

The court made it clear that it had issued this prohibitory order in order to ensure free flow of traffic on public roads and also for the safety of the travelling public.

The political parties have raised their voices against the Ban. They do not realise that the common masses have taken to vehicles and that they are not favour of traffic blocks. The change is similar to party workers' demanding luxuries for party work and no longer being satisfied with 'Parippu Vada and kattan chaaya'.
Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has already said that the government would go in Appeal against the Ban. He is a person that used to say even just before becoming minister that he would make bombs in police stations.
Like the negativism towards industrialisation in the private sector, the CPM might be doing a public service in the long run here. A state of constant traffic blocks might prevent people from going in for more vehicles of their own. This would only do good in the long run. CPM's impeding industrialisation alone has prevented our environment from being totally destroyed. Similarly, less vehicles might avert an impeding vehicular pollution explosion here.
